Caltech Salutes Its Service Members

In commemoration of Veterans Day—which falls this year on Saturday, November 11—we asked service members from the Caltech community to share photos from their time in uniform. Here, we recognize and honor many of those who served—and some who continue to serve—in the armed forces.

Larry D. James, deputy director of JPL, served in the U.S. Air Force for decades in a career that spanned a wide variety of space operations and acquisition assignments, including space shuttle payload specialist; Global Positioning System satellite program manager; and commander of the 14th Air Force.

Oliver Mueller (center, top row) served eight years in the U.S. Army Reserve as a first lieutenant and detachment commander of a movement control team after earning an Army ROTC scholarship to pay for college. The photo was taken in Japan during a joint U.S.-Japanese training exercise near the city of Fukuoka in the mid-1990s.

Lisa M. Soltero, business systems consultant with IMSS, served in the U.S. Air Force from 1985 to 1989 and, in 2001, joined the Air Force Reserve. She is a senior master sergeant at the 50th Aerial Port Squadron based at March Air Reserve Base. Her most recent deployment in 2013 sent her to the Middle East for seven months. She is currently the superintendent of the Air Terminal Operations Center.

Jose A. Navarrete, Jr., administrative assistant in Parking & Commuter Services, enlisted in the U.S. Army for three years in 1990, during which time he served as a journalist. The photo above was taken during his time as a cadet at the University of Arizona before enlisting.

Michael Torres, telephone technician for IMSS, served in the U.S. Air Force for six years, ending in 2006 with the rank of staff sergeant. This photo was taken recently at his office on campus.
