Honor Code
No member of the Caltech community shall take unfair advantage of any other member of the Caltech community.
At the heart of Caltech, the Honor Code is our code of ethics that guides the entire community of students, staff, and faculty. It's simple and straightforward, yet quite effective. Our Honor Code allows professors to assign take home exams and trust that students will not cheat. It means that a student can leave their laptop unattended and be confident that it will be there when they get back. It means that students have 24-hour access to facilities on campus to get their work done. Our honor code is what defines every member of our community and what makes Caltech, Caltech.
Collaboration
The Honor Code creates a trustworthy environment at Caltech. Collaboration is another essential component. In line with the scientific community, collaboration plays a significant role in Techer life. At Caltech, it is expected that you will have both the support of your peers and the direction of an outstanding faculty team as you work through your assignments.
At Caltech, working together is a way of life. In reality, the majority of problem sets are given with the expectation that students will collaborate to find solutions to the problems, which may occasionally include ones that no one is even certain can be solved. At Caltech, students are surrounded by peers who share their intellectual interests. Through hours of debate, discussion, and possibly even late-night pizza, students can gain a knowledge of ideas crucial to the development of science as well as lifelong connections.
