STEM Programs
STEM Programs
Whether it is a year-round activity or for a summer break, in-person or virtual, you can be sure that our applicants pursue their curiosities in and out of the classroom. When we review your application, we are looking to understand your experiences within the context of what is available and we want to learn about opportunities that you have created for yourself.
Sometimes, applicants ask us: "What should I be doing in the summer to best prepare for Caltech?" Sometimes, this question is followed up by "What summer programs should I…?" Perhaps, that is what brought you to this page.
Well, our answer is and will always be: We hope you're spending your summer doing things that you're passionate and curious about. We understand that STEM exploration can be challenging due to limited access or home life responsibilities. That's why our admissions committee practices holistic review, considering what's available to you and your lived experiences.
For Caltech, there are many ways you can demonstrate your STEM preparedness.
For some of our Techers, Caltech may be one of their first experiences where they become part of a community of like-minded peers who are deeply passionate about STEM, push the boundaries of what is possible, and creatively collaborate on problem-solving.
Sometimes, students join a STEM community through summer or year-long programs that drive their curiosity deeper, explore topics that may not be taught in school, gain exposure to hands-on STEM experiences, and have fun with peers.
Participation in these programs isn't required and doesn't guarantee admission to Caltech. But there are programs out there that you can check out. Some programs are free and others may provide financial aid. While not a comprehensive list, some STEM programs that Techers participated in the past include:
- United States Invitational Young Physicists Tournament (USIYPT)
- Girls Who Code
- Society for Science programs (ISEF, STS, etc.)
- Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists (PROMYS)
- Upward Bound Math/Science
- Summer Science Program (SSP)
- Canada/USA Mathcamp
- Robotics (VEX or FIRST)
- Research in Science and Engineering (RISE)
- MIT Introduction to Technology, Engineering and Science (MITES)
- COSMOS
- Science Olympiad
- And more!
